To Know Me Is To Know
. . . f r e e | - “breaking free from body shame” by @jessaconnolly, is the book i get to create community with over at @circle31_bookclub.
today i invited us to post a selfie and finish this sentence: “to know me is to know…”
i was in a room full of teenage girls at youth camp i was a leader for when i was first introduced to this question. truthfully, i can’t remember my answer, but i remember the answers of the girls around me who spoke their fun “knows” and also some hard ones.
i was so privileged to be in the room.
when we launched our book club on monday, and while we were sharing introductions on a live, @kendralegrand_ mentioned a word that sticks out to her about me is loyal.
what a forehead kiss from the Lord. 🥹
i can’t speak for all women, but in my experience, i have found it extremely difficult to talk about myself. is that just me? follow me here— when i’ve been asked to submit bio’s for events i’ve presented— that HAS to be one of the most uncomfortable activities ever, sis. “i have to write all the things that qualifies me to speak at this event? no thank you.” on more than one occasion i’ve asked others to write bio’s for me, ABOUT me.
why? truth is, there are thousands reasons why. a main one for me is, growing up, women’s voices simply weren’t celebrated enough. i once had a young man walk out a room i was giving a talk on the gospel message at. we fight to create space in rooms and we fight the battle of not enough. sadly, some of us women can barely do it for ourselves and hardly do it for others.
#selfsaturday is an invitation to celebrate you. how far have you come and have you celebrated that lately?
to know me is to know, i AM loyal. to know me is to know, when i say i love you— i mean it. when i say forever— i mean it. to know me is to know i’m fragile but i am not weak.
to know me is to know . . . i believe we are ALL image bearers. period. #thatsbible
breaking free from body shame is a holistic healing experience. mind, body, soul… this is my prayer in reading this book— freedom for myself and for all the sisters reading alongside me.
Selah.
